Linh Ung Pagoda - Da Nang

Located on a hill shaped like a turtle reaching out to the vast sea, backed by a vast primeval forest filled with trees and wildlife, Linh Ung Pagoda – Bai But on Son Tra Peninsula is not only a typical Buddhist structure of Da Nang but is also considered a place where the spiritual energy of heaven, earth, and people converges. Amid the spacious natural scenery, the pagoda appears majestic and serene, becoming a prominent spiritual destination of this coastal city.

A Buddhist realm in the human world

Linh Ung Pagoda – Bai But is located in a special position, leaning firmly against Son Tra Peninsula with its front facing directly toward the vast East Sea. Looking out from here, on the left is Cu Lao Cham like a screen in the middle of the sea, on the right is the majestic Hai Van Pass, and below is the gentle Han River embracing the city. All of this creates a rare harmonious space between sea, sky, mountain, and river.

Not only beautiful in landscape, this place is also associated with a folk story rich in spiritual color. It is said that during the reign of King Minh Mang, fishermen in this coastal area discovered a Buddha statue drifting onto the sandy shore. The locals then built a small shrine to worship it. Since then, they believed they were protected by Avalokiteśvara, helping them overcome storms, keeping the sea calm, and ensuring peaceful harvests. Therefore, this land was called Bai But, like a “Buddhist realm in the earthly world”.

Through many changes of time and history, with the devotion of monks, the support of the authorities, and numerous Buddhists, Linh Ung Pagoda – Bai But, after many years of construction, has become a grand structure on Son Tra Mountain. The pagoda not only reflects the bond between Buddhism and the nation but also marks a development of Vietnamese Buddhism in the modern era.

A place where the spiritual energy of heaven, earth, and people converges

Today, Linh Ung Pagoda – Bai But is considered one of the largest and most prominent pagodas in Da Nang, both in scale and architectural-artistic value. The overall complex harmoniously combines the traditional features of Vietnamese pagodas with modern architectural lines. The curved dragon-shaped roofs, large sturdy pillars, and delicately carved dragon motifs all contribute to creating a majestic yet graceful beauty for the pagoda.

The main hall is the most solemn and tranquil space, where the statue of Shakyamuni Buddha is placed in the central position. On both sides are statues of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and Tripitaka Buddha, together with Dharma Protectors and Arhats arranged symmetrically, creating a sacred and dignified atmosphere for the entire main hall.

The most special highlight of Linh Ung Pagoda is the towering statue of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, majestic against the sea and sky. The statue stands with its back against the mountain and face toward the sea, with compassionate eyes as if watching over and protecting the coastal people on their fishing voyages. One hand forms the samadhi mudra, while the other holds a vase of holy nectar, symbolizing salvation, peace, and compassion. Inside the statue are multiple worship floors, creating a unique feature for this structure.

From the pagoda’s elevated position, visitors can take in a panoramic view of Da Nang City, Son Tra Peninsula, forests, mountains, and the vast sea. Farther away are the Marble Mountains and the long stretch of white sand embracing the coastline. At every moment of the day, this place has its own beauty: bright in the morning sunlight, breezy and cool in the afternoon, and at night, the city lights in the distance appear like a sparkling band of stars in the magical darkness.

It can be said that Linh Ung Pagoda – Bai But is not only a place for religious activities, worship, and Buddhist practice for monks, nuns, and followers, but also an ideal stop for visitors seeking peace amid vast nature. Located within the Son Tra Peninsula tourist complex, the pagoda has become a prominent spiritual tourism destination of Da Nang, where scenic beauty, cultural depth, and inner serenity converge.
