Quang Chicken Rice

Chicken rice has long become one of the famous specialty dishes of Quang land that anyone passing through should try at least once. For many people, visiting Quang Nam or Da Nang without eating chicken rice means the trip is still not truly complete. That expression may be somewhat emphatic, but it clearly shows the pride local people have in this richly flavored hometown dish.

Not only loved by domestic diners, Quang-style chicken rice is also known to many international tourists. The famous travel magazine Lonely Planet once described it as a richly flavored dish attractive enough for anyone who loves chicken dishes to seek out and try at least once.

The special point that makes Hoi-style chicken rice so appealing lies in its very distinctive preparation, imbued with the style of Central Vietnam. After being boiled, the chicken meat is shredded and mixed evenly with onions, Vietnamese coriander, and seasonings. The cook’s skill is shown in making each strand of chicken meat absorb the seasonings, remain lightly fragrant and mildly spicy, while still keeping its firmness, not becoming mushy, and preserving the chicken’s characteristic aroma.

Besides the familiar shredded chicken rice, in Tam Ky, Quang Nam, and Da Nang there is also another preparation method that is very popular. In this version, the chicken is not only boiled and shredded but also chopped into bite-sized pieces and then fried until golden and crispy, creating a richer and more attractive flavor. The rice portion usually has the eye-catching orange-red color of ripe gac fruit, making it both beautiful and fragrant. To make the dish more authentic, finely sliced kaffir lime leaves are often sprinkled on top. Although this preparation is somewhat close to Northern taste, the dish still fully retains the Central Vietnam character, with rice cooked in chicken broth and eaten with pickled papaya, chili sauce, and soy sauce in a very distinctive way.

Chicken rice is truly a representative dish of the Quang Nam – Da Nang region, sold on many streets and always especially attractive to diners from near and far. In Hoi An, familiar addresses include Ba Buoi chicken rice, Ba Minh chicken rice, or the chicken rice shop in Sica alley. In Da Nang, many famous chicken rice restaurants are also frequently visited by locals and tourists, such as Hong Ngoc or Hai. In those places, diners can fully enjoy the authentic flavor of chicken rice with shredded chicken, roasted chicken, served with onions, lime leaves, mint, and pickled papaya.

It is precisely the harmonious combination of fragrant sticky rice, richly flavored chicken, and refreshing side dishes that creates the unique appeal of Quang chicken rice. This is not only a delicious dish but also a distinctive feature in the culinary culture of Quang Nam – Da Nang. And perhaps, once having tasted Hoi An chicken rice, even the most demanding diners will find it hard to withhold their praise.
